Tela in Michaelmas 2015

In Michaelmas the Fourth-Form scholars and exhibitioners embarked on a new programme of study named Tela (literally ‘the web’). Over Michaelmas the groups focused on graffiti, from cave paintings and medieval churches to the protest art of Paris and Berlin in 1968 and contemporary street art of Athens, Manila and Rio, via artists including Os Gêmeos, Blek le Rat and Banksy.

In doing so, students have considered contrasting views and theories on the question ‘what is art?’, examined how societies interact with space and explored what ‘public’ really means. In Lent Tela is turning towards the study of concrete in order to examine the relationship between society and technology through cement, via the Roman Empire and brutalist architecture. And in order to understand the wonder material that is concrete, they made it (and of course, had to try out spray painting too)!
